Most Robust Electric Vehicle Charging Station Open In San Mateo

New fast charging Freedom Station® Now Available at Caltrain San Mateo Station

The City of San Mateo, and NRG EVgo (ee-vee-go), a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., announced the installation of the new EV Fast-Charging Freedom Station® site located at the Downtown CalTrain Station. The chargers will give Electric Vehicle (EV) drivers the ability to live completely green by driving to the station on pure electric, taking the train, and then charging up before returning home on pure electric.

Kathy Kleinbaum, San Mateo’s Sustainability Manager stated, “The City of San Mateo is proud to have entered into this innovative partnership with NRG EVgo to provide this important amenity to Downtown San Mateo at no cost to the City.

Located in the hot-bed of EV adoption between Palo Alto and San Francisco, the EVgo Freedom Station site is designed to support both current and future charging technology, by serving local EV drivers’ on-the-go charging needs regardless of what kind of electric vehicle they drive. Each Freedom station in California includes two DC fast chargers, capable of serving Chademo and SAE standards, and Level 2 EV chargers for additional customer convenience.

“EVgo is the largest developer and network provider of public DC Fast Charging for electric vehicles in the nation and we are using this experience to partner with the City of San Mateo to begin serving area customers,” said Terry O’Day EVgo’s Vice President, Western Region. “This robust network of charging stations features the fastest public charging available and provides drivers with the confidence needed to purchase an EV and discover an incredible new driving experience.”

58 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are from on-road transportation. The addition of the EVgo Freedom Station will help the City of San Mateo reach some of their Climate Action Plan (CAP) goals – especially those slated to reduce transportation pollution.

“Locating DC fast chargers in highly visible public locations provides a key amenity for existing electric vehicle drivers, making EVs even more convenient and attractive to prospective new EV drivers,” says Rafael Reyes, San Mateo Sustainability Commissioner.

”I am very excited to have this amenity available in the downtown,” says Mayor, Maureen Freschet. “The City Council has made the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure one of our top priorities for 2015 and this project goes a long way to help us achieve our goals.”For more information, please visit or

San Mateo Citywide Yard Sale

San Mateo Citywide Yard Sale

The Citywide Yard Sale brings neighbors together to reuse and recycle the items they no longer want while providing and opportunity to build community.

Register online to put your yard sale on the map and join other residents in this Citywide event.

Join hundreds of San Mateo residents in the San Mateo Citywide Yard Sale taking place on Saturday, August 29th from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM happening at multiple locations throughout town.

That’s right, there’s no single location for this event. It could be at your house, your neighbor’s house, or at a block party on the other side of town. The Citywide Yard Sale entices residents and visitors to explore the community while providing an opportunity for neighbors to partner and participate in this community event.

Participation is easy! Once you decide to host a yard sale, whether on your own or with a group of neighbors, simply register your yard sale online at The location of your yard sale will be posted on the Citywide Yard Sale Map so hundreds of bargain hunters can easily find your location and buy your items on the day of the event.

Registration is FREE and includes an easy to use form that asks basic information about your yard sale as well as an opportunity to post pictures and highlight the special items that you’ll want to feature. The City of San Mateo will promote the event and share the map on the City’s website as well as print and digital media.

Yard sale registration opened on Monday, July 20th and more than 30 residents have registered. The City is anticipating registration to continue at this pace through August and is aiming to have at least 100 active yard sales signed-up. A plethora of treasures are featured including a dining room table, collectible dolls, bolts of fabric, and even a Harley. Now’s the time to purge all the extra items you’ve been storing in your garage, attic, and closets – it could be just what someone has been looking for.

The Citywide Yard Sale is as much a neighborhood fun-raiser as it is a fundraiser for you or possibly a local organization of your choice. Don’t miss the opportunity to sell your unwanted items, find great bargains and meet your San Mateo neighbors.

“The Citywide Yard Sale brings neighbors together to reuse and recycle the times they no longer need while providing an opportunity to form friendships and create a well-connected community,” says Donna Divodi, San Mateo Volunteer Coordinator. “When these connections form, residents look out for one another and pay attention to what’s happening next door, on their block and throughout their neighborhood. The yard sale will provide a fun, interactive way to build community and establish the neighborly relationships that make San Mateo a safe, vibrant place to live and raise a family.”
